About Us

Background Overview – Medical Aid and Textile Recycling for Africa Cause (MATRAC)

Medical Aid and Textile Recycling for Africa Cause (MATRAC) is a Congolese-led community organisation based in London. Founded in 2024, the organisation was established to respond to the health, education and justice challenges faced by Congolese communities and other African diaspora groups in the UK.

MATRAC supports communities experiencing social, economic and health inequalities, with the aim of promoting wellbeing, inclusion and equal opportunities.

The organisation focuses on tackling health inequalities that disproportionately affect Black communities, including serious long-term conditions such as HIV, mental ill-health, diabetes and cancer.  MATRAC recognises that these health disparities are closely linked to wider social factors including stigma, marginalisation, isolation, poverty, discrimination and racism.

Through awareness-raising, community outreach and partnerships with local organisations, MATRAC works to improve access to health information, support services and preventative care.

In addition to health, MATRAC is committed to addressing education and justice inequalities affecting African communities in the UK, particularly people from Congolese backgrounds. Many individuals face barriers to education, training and employment due to language barriers, limited awareness of available services, and socio-economic disadvantage.

MATRAC supports children, young people and adults by promoting access to education, skills development, mentoring and guidance, helping individuals build confidence and improve their opportunities.

The organisation also promotes fairness and equal treatment by equipping community members with a clearer understanding of their rights and responsibilities within UK systems, including education, employment and public services. Through advocacy, community engagement and collaborative partnerships, MATRAC aims to challenge discrimination, reduce social exclusion and empower Congolese and other African communities to participate fully in society. Ultimately, MATRAC’s mission is to support healthier, more informed and more resilient communities while contributing to greater social justice and equity.
